How Climate Change May Affect Your Farm

What does climate change mean for a farm? How can farmers make sense of all the climate change information to safeguard their enterprises today? Despite some of the negative impacts that climate change will have on agriculture, the agricultural sector is also presented with several opportunities. Both the potential negative impacts and the opportunities will be discussed.

First, the meaning of “climate change” will be explained, in a clear and concise manner, highlighting issues of importance for farmers. Then, some of the changes already experienced in Canada’s growing season will be shown. A look at what farmers can expect a future Canadian climate to look like will be presented, and the impacts of these changes on small and large farms will be addressed. Finally, how to cope with some of the expected changes that may occur, in order to better manage the associated risks of a changing climate, will be described.
